What is an Intensive Course

An intensive driving lessons are a series of classes that are taken over a short period. We have one, two and four week intensive driving courses available.

Non intensive courses are anything that extend beyond the 4 weeks, and we also offer these to suit our students lifestyles.

You will receive one-to-one tuition with a qualified driving instructor. The training is the same as you would receive with a longer series of conventional lessons. However, an intensive driving course can be easily tailored to focus on areas that you are least comfortable with. Due to the frequency of the classes, the student will absorb the information quick enough to pass their exam in a matter of days!

How good are intensive driving courses?

Typically, new drivers take between 40 to 50 hours before reaching test standard. Learning to drive can be a long process, which requires months of dedication. So, completing it as quickly as possible with an intensive driving course is very attractive. But the question many new drivers ask themselves is: just how good are intensive driving courses?

The success of an intensive driving course depends on the drivers ability to handle stress and pressure.

People learn at different speeds and in different ways. When you take intensive driving lessons you learn exactly the same skills that someone will be learning on a weekly basis learns. The difference is that you have less time to mentally absorb these skills. Before you choose to do an intensive driving course, stop and think about your learning style. Do you struggle under pressure or thrive in intense environments? Whether the course is ‘good’ or not very much depends on the driver.

Intensive Driving Courses - what are the disadvantages?

How long does it last?

We offer intensive courses in one, two and four-week blocks. It is hard to say exactly how long you will need because everyone learns at a different pace. However, those in their late teens and early twenties tend to learn at a quicker rate than those in their thirties and beyond. Young people who pick up practical skills easily could be ready to take their test after 30-40 hours of tuition. Our instructors will assess each learner after a couple lessons and be able to offer a more accurate figure.

What are the benefits?

The biggest benefit of taking an intensive driving course is the saving on time. People often book a week off work or learn through the holidays. Instead of learning slowly over a period of months, learning can be squeezed into a shorter time frame. This means you could go from learner to driver in just a matter of days.

Learning to drive can feel overwhelming, but the nature of intensive courses means you have to tackle your nerves head on. Your confidence on the road and behind the wheel will increase very quickly. Intensive driving courses can be very satisfying.

What are the disadvantages?

If you aren’t initially a confident driver, the reduced time period may mean that you feel nervous. Nerves can get in the way of passing your test, even if you feel you did well during your intensive course. If you do fail, it’s important to remember that you have all the skills you need. Bear in mind that the UK pass rate is approximately 43%, so failing a test is incredibly common.

How much do intensive driving courses cost?

The cost of an intensive driving course can feel prohibitive. However, its crucial to bear in mind that they often work out cheaper than paying by the week. An intensive course gets you through the learning and the test quickly, whilst weekly lessons can go on for a long time. This is especially true if you don't have a car available to do practice outside of lessons. Driving lessons cost £42 an hour and it takes the average person around 40 hours to learn to drive, which makes a total of £1680. However, intensive courses mean you cold learn quicker, perhaps needing only 30 hours costing £1215 . If you already have some driving experience, you may find 20 hours is enough. This costs only £830.

Semi-intensive driving courses

As well as our fully intensive driving courses we are also able to offer semi-intensive driving lessons. The main difference is that learners on this course do not need to have passed their theory test. The normal waiting time for a theory test is 2 weeks and the practical test is on average 6 – 12 weeks depending on the time of year.

Our semi-intensive driving courses can fit in with your lifestyle and give you a more flexible approach that will get you ready to pass your theory test and practical test over a short period of time – generally between 8 and 12 weeks. One of the advantages of a semi-intensive course is that you have more time to digest the information and also have the time to practice outside of your lessons.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are many questions that we get asked about how an intensive driving course works so we’ve put together the answers to the most common questions.

  • How many hours will I need?

This is one of the hardest questions to answer simply because everyone is different. As a general rule of thumb, those in their teens and early twenties tend to pick up new skills quicker than say someone in their forties. Young people who are active and pick up practical skills easily could be ready to take their test after 30 – 40 hours of tuition, but this is something that our instructors will be able to assess usually after a couple of lessons.

  • Do our courses include the test fee?

No, our intensive driving courses in Bristol don’t include the cost of your practical test which is currently £62. Learners will need to book their own test on a day and time that suits them, please also check that your chosen instructor is available on this date.

  • Can I book my driving test before doing my theory?

No, you are not able to even look at dates for your practical test until you have completed your theory test. For anyone looking to book an intensive course, we’d recommend that you complete your theory test before booking your course.

  • How do I book a course?

Just give us a call today on 07837 796842 and we’ll be happy to discuss the availability of our intensive driving courses with you. We require a £200 non-refundable deposit to secure your dates which need to be paid at least two weeks prior to your course start date with the balance needing to be paid before the start of your course.

  • Can I stop and restart my course?

Unfortunately, we do not allow learners to stop and restart their course in the future or stop partway through a course. All our intensive driving courses are non-refundable as our instructors have no way of filling the space created by you pulling out.

More frequently asked questions about intensive driving courses in Bristol

  • Do intensive driving lessons work?

Intensive driving lessons provide many hours of driving lessons in a short space of time. The aim is to enable learner drivers to pass their tests faster than if they have weeks of individual lessons. Intensive driving courses vary in length and price, depending on how much time you can commit to.

  • How long do intensive driving lessons take?

Intensive driving lessons, also known as an intensive driving course, vary in length. At A Class Driving School we offer one, two and four-week courses. The price depends on how many hours you want to do: 20, 30, 35 or 40. Week-long intensive courses are popular and require learners to commit to the course full-time for the entire week. If you have other commitments, you can spread your lessons over two or four weeks instead. We also offer semi-intensive courses which are more flexible and last between 8 and 12 weeks. Semi-intensive courses are suitable for people who haven’t yet passed their theory test as they can take it during the learning process.

  • Is an intensive driving course easier?

It depends on who you are and how you learn. The important thing to remember that everyone takes the same test at the end, whether you have 2 hours of lessons every week for a long time or take a week-long course. The difference is that those who do weekly lessons have a lot longer to mentally prepare. Before choosing which method to use, consider your learning style. Some people struggle with the pressure of an intensive course, whilst others find the fast pace stimulating. Whether it’s easier or not very much depends on you.

  • What is the pass rate for intensive driving courses?

Pass rates for intensive courses vary between schools. It depends on the student and how many hours they need, as people learn at different speeds. Young people tend to learn quicker than older people, and could easily be ready to pass their test after 30-40 hours of lessons. It’s worth bearing in mind that the UK pass rate for the driving test is approximately 43%, so many people need more lessons than they initially think. If you don’t pass your test first time after an intensive course, you can have a few ‘top up’ lessons to get you over the line.

  • Do intensive courses include the theory test?

Before embarking on one of our intensive courses we recommend that you pass your theory test. You can’t take your practical test before you have passed the theory test, so there is little point doing an intensive course if you then have to wait several weeks before taking your test. You can usually take your theory test within two weeks of booking, so it won’t slow you down much.

  • Should You Take An Intensive Course Or Pay For Individual Lessons?

We get this question a lot who are curious about our intensive courses, but are used to paying for individual lessons. Individual lessons usually end up costing more and they have less direction to help you pass a test.

We think our intensive courses are the best way to learn, and we’ll lay out some of the reasons in this post. We’ll also tell you what type of intensive course to take, depending on your personality.

  • What Type Of Intensive Course Should You Take

It comes down to your speed of learning. If you learn things slowly and want to take your time, then we recommend taking the 4 week intensive course.

If you’ve just come from another school or you failed a test and want to get the basics down again, we recommend the one week course.

And if you’re somewhere in the middle and you aren’t sure, then pick the 2 or 3 week intensive course.

Intensive courses are faster, save you money and can teach you to pass your test in just one to four weeks.

"I passed my driving test first time today thanks to Paul. I did a week intensive course with him and he was brilliant. He taught me everything I needed to know and I felt confident when driving, he has a lot of patience and wouldn't hesitate to tell me if I did something wrong and then explain to me how to fix it. I was able to have a laugh with Paul and felt comfortable while driving. Excellent driving instructor 10/10 would recommend." - Thomas Williams
