The first thing you have to do is P.O.M. Prepare, observe then manoeuvre. To prepare the car you firstly de-press the clutch all the way down to the floor, keep your left foot still, then with your left hand put the car into first gear. You do this with an open palm, towards the left side of the car than forward to the front left wheel.
You then need to 'set the gas'. with your right foot you need to squeeze the accelerator about the width of a pound coin, until you get a lively even hum from the engine. You can use the rev counter to help, some where between 1 and 1.5 revs should be enough. Your right foot now stays still.
Slowly, a fraction at a time the left foot is going to come off the clutch until the engine noise dies and the car feels like it wants to move. Once this happens, both feet stay still and your car is now prepared.
Next you need to observe. You do this firstly by checking your interior mirror, then right door mirror (looking for any other road user, remember not to make them slow down for you), then over your right shoulder in your blind spot and if it's clear, your left hand releases the handbrake and the car will start to move. Both hands should now be on the wheel in the 10-2 position and you need to get the car out from the parked position you started in.
Imagine the steering wheel is like a clock face - turn the wheel 5 minutes to the right (to move away from the kerb) then 10 minutes to the left followed by 5 minutes to the right again to get a good position in the road and straighten the wheels. You should always aim to be 1 meter from the kerb (if the road is wide enough) which is hard to imagine, so use the bottom wiper blade to help you. See photo 1.
This is where we need to remember M-S-M. Mirrors, signal, manoeuvre. When we want to stop the first thing we do is check our interior mirror to see the speed and position of the cars behind us. Followed by our left door mirror. Are there any cyclists approaching from behind?
We use a signal if someone is going to benefit from it (that includes cyclists and pedestrians) and it's then you change the position of the car. With the steering wheel you move it 5 minutes to the left, the car will drift closer to the kerb, 10 minutes to the right to straighten up and not be too close to the pavement and 5 minutes again to the right to get the wheels straight.
Whenever we pull over to the side of the road we must fully de-press the clutch and keep that foot still and use progressive, smooth braking. You can begin to de-clutch and brake soon after checking your mirrors. Using the footbrake illuminates the rear brake lights, which is another form of signal in the M-S-M routine.
Once the car has stopped, fully apply the handbrake, put the car into neutral, cancel the signal if you used one and then relax your feet.
